Gambling Addiction & Responsible Betting

Betting should be entertaining. If it stops being fun — or if it starts affecting your finances, relationships, or wellbeing — it may be time to seek help. This page explains the signs of problem gambling and where to find support.

If you are in crisis right now, please contact a gambling helpline in your country immediately. Most helplines offer free, confidential support 24 hours a day. You are not alone, and help is available.

What is problem gambling?

Problem gambling is a pattern of betting behaviour that causes harm — to finances, mental health, relationships, or work. It can affect anyone, regardless of how long they have been betting or how much they typically wager. Problem gambling is not a character flaw; it is a recognised condition with effective treatments available.

Gambling addiction (also called compulsive gambling or gambling disorder) is the most severe form of problem gambling, where a person feels unable to control their betting despite the negative consequences it causes.

Signs of problem gambling

Consider whether any of the following apply to you or someone you know:

Betting more than you planned or can afford

Chasing losses — betting more to try to recover money lost

Lying to family or friends about how much you bet

Feeling anxious or irritable when not betting

Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund betting

Neglecting work, family, or social commitments because of betting

Thinking about gambling constantly, even when doing other things

Using betting as a way to escape stress or difficult emotions

If several of these apply to you, we strongly encourage you to speak to a professional or contact a helpline.

Tips for betting responsibly

Set a budget and stick to it
Decide in advance how much you can afford to lose and treat it as the cost of entertainment. Never bet money you need for bills, rent, or food.
Set time limits
Decide how long you will spend betting and set an alarm. It is easy to lose track of time, especially when betting online.
Never chase losses
If you lose your budget, stop. Chasing losses is one of the most common paths to serious financial harm. Losses are part of betting — accept them.
Take regular breaks
Step away regularly, even mid-session. If you find it difficult to stop or take breaks, this may be a warning sign.
Don't bet under pressure or emotion
Avoid betting when stressed, upset, or to solve financial problems. Decisions made in these states are rarely good ones.
Use bookmaker safety tools
Most licensed bookmakers offer deposit limits, loss limits, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion options. Use them proactively.

Self-exclusion

If you feel you need a break from betting, self-exclusion allows you to block yourself from one or more gambling sites for a set period. Most licensed bookmakers offer this feature in their account settings. Steps to take:

  • Log into your account and go to Responsible Gambling or Account Settings
  • Select "Self-exclusion" or "Take a break" and choose a duration
  • Contact customer support if you cannot find the option — they are required to help
  • Consider national self-exclusion schemes if available in your country (e.g. GamStop in the UK)
  • Ask a trusted person to help you follow through if you are struggling to do it alone
