Mestalla hosts one of the most intriguing fixtures from the postponed opening round. Carlos Corberan is trying to make Valencia more flexible, with a new defensive structure and greater variety in transition, while Manuel Pellegrini's Real Betis continue to rely on technical quality, possession and creativity in the final third. Valencia have refreshed their midfield and added new attacking options, while Betis can now combine Antony and Cucho Hernandez with Rodrigo Riquelme and Fran Garcia. Neither side is yet at full strength, but recent meetings at Mestalla have regularly produced chances at both ends. That makes Over 2.5 Goals at 1.97 an interesting option.

Carlos Corberan starts the season with a noticeably different tactical setup. During preseason he worked extensively with three central defenders and wing-backs, and against Celta Vigo Valencia often defended with a back five. The idea is clear - add an extra player in the first phase of buildup, give Javi Guerra more freedom to advance and create better conditions for runners from deeper positions. Without the ball, Valencia try to close central spaces and attack vertically as soon as possession is recovered. The structure is still inconsistent, though. Corberan admitted that his side defended too deep during certain spells and struggled to create enough in positional attacks.

The first competitive match confirmed some of those concerns. Valencia drew 0-0 with Celta, and the Mestalla crowd made its frustration clear after a game in which the hosts created too little. There were still positive individual performances. Guerra repeatedly carried the ball into advanced areas, Ryunosuke Sato brought energy between the lines and Guido Rodriguez immediately became an important presence in midfield. The main problem was finishing. Arnaut Danjuma reached several promising positions but failed to convert, while the team lacked a consistent penalty-box threat until later changes.

Stole Dimitrievski remains the first-choice goalkeeper, with Cesar Tarrega, Mouctar Diakhaby, Jose Gaya, Justin de Haas and recent arrival Pablo Maffeo among the defensive options. De Haas is now a fitness concern after an ankle problem. Guido Rodriguez, Guerra and Filip Ugrinic provide the midfield base, while Umar Sadiq, Hugo Duro, Danjuma, Dani Raba and Sato give Corberan several attacking combinations. Squad availability remains an issue, with Luis Rioja, Dimitri Foulquier, Diego Lopez and Copete all having missed the Celta game. That makes Valencia's defensive structure less settled than Corberan would ideally want before facing a much more creative Betis attack.

Pellegrini remains committed to the same footballing principles. Betis want to control possession, create triangles on the flanks and progress through short combinations, but they can also accelerate quickly when space appears. Technical players between the lines remain crucial to the system, with wide attackers drifting inside, the striker linking play and the full-backs providing width.

The summer additions have expanded those possibilities. Riquelme can operate from the left or move centrally, while Fran Garcia gives the team more pace from deep. Pellegrini immediately trusted several newcomers in the opening league game against Real Sociedad, including Garcia and Facundo Bernal.

Betis showed two different sides in that 1-0 victory. They needed time to find space, but after halftime the game opened up and Pellegrini's side became much more dangerous. The winning move summed up their attacking quality: Fran Garcia, Antony and Cucho Hernandez combined before Riquelme finished first time. Isco later had an opportunity to double the lead, while Sociedad also created chances to equalize. The final score was only 1-0, but the second half could easily have produced several goals.

Alvaro Valles gives Betis security in goal, while Marc Bartra and Natan are central to the defense. Hector Bellerin and Fran Garcia provide width, with Marc Roca, Pablo Fornals, Bernal and Isco available in midfield. The attacking trio of Antony, Riquelme and Cucho is particularly interesting because each offers a different threat. Antony can create one-on-one advantages, Riquelme attacks space from deeper positions and Cucho contributes as both a finisher and a link player.

There are still squad concerns. Giovani Lo Celso missed the opening match after dealing with physical problems, while Abde Ezzalzouli had returned to group training but was not risked. Aitor Ruibal, Diego Conde and Petit also missed the first game. Even so, Betis still have enough technical quality to create problems for Valencia's new defensive shape.

One trend stands out clearly - both teams scored in all five of the most recent meetings. Three of those matches also produced at least three goals.

Some of the most open games have come at Mestalla, including Valencia's 4-2 victory and Betis' 2-1 away win. The most recent meeting in February also finished 2-1. That makes the low-scoring starts from both teams less convincing as evidence that this matchup must also stay tight.

Prediction

The early numbers may hide the real attacking potential of this fixture. Valencia failed to score against Celta, but they still reached several promising positions. Danjuma wasted opportunities, Ugrinic had a dangerous chance and Guerra repeatedly carried the ball toward the final third. Corberan can also turn to Duro or Sadiq earlier if he wants more penalty-box presence against Betis.

At the same time, Valencia's three-centre-back structure does not yet look fully polished. The injury concern around De Haas and other defensive absences make this a difficult matchup against a team with Antony, Cucho, Riquelme and Isco.

Betis have an even clearer route to scoring. Pellegrini's side improved noticeably after halftime against Real Sociedad and created enough situations to score more than once. They also allowed the opposition some dangerous moments, which matters here. If Valencia respond to the frustration of the 0-0 draw by playing more aggressively at Mestalla, Betis should receive more transition opportunities.

Over 2.5 requires a genuinely productive game, but the combination of Valencia's need to show more ambition, Betis' attacking quality and the history of this matchup makes Over 2.5 Goals at 1.97 an appealing selection.

Why the Low-Scoring Starts Could Be Misleading

● Both teams have scored in each of the last five meetings. Valencia have found the net even in defeats, while Betis have consistently created chances in this matchup. Two of the last three meetings at Mestalla produced at least three goals, finishing 4-2 and 1-2.

● Valencia also have clear room for improvement in finishing. Danjuma reached good positions against Celta, Sato added movement around the penalty area and Corberan can introduce Duro or Sadiq earlier. A more vertical approach may actually suit Valencia better against Betis than the slower positional attacks that struggled in the opening match.

● Betis' 1-0 win over Real Sociedad should not be mistaken for a shift toward purely conservative football. The second half produced chances at both ends, Riquelme scored after a well-worked move and Isco could have added another, while Valles also had to protect the lead. If a similar exchange begins earlier at Mestalla, the game can move toward three goals quite quickly.
