Uruguay vs Spain
FIFA World Cup 2026
Group H, June 27, 2026, 00:01
Estadio Akron, Zapopan

Uruguay and Spain meet in a Group H finale where the names suggest a heavyweight clash, but the tournament rhythm points in different directions. Uruguay have drawn twice, first 1-1 with Saudi Arabia and then 2-2 with Cape Verde, leaving Marcelo Bielsa’s side under pressure and still searching for control. Spain, meanwhile, responded to their 0-0 frustration against Cape Verde with a sharp 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, restoring tempo, width and confidence in the final third. Uruguay need a result, but that urgency could expose the spaces Spain are best equipped to attack. Spain -1 Asian Handicap at 1.76 looks like the preferred angle.

Uruguay

Uruguay have not yet found the level of authority expected from a Bielsa team. The draw with Saudi Arabia carried familiar signs of pressure and intensity, but it also lacked the finishing and game management needed to turn territory into three points. The 2-2 draw with Cape Verde was even more concerning: Uruguay had to respond twice, with Maxi Araújo and Agustín Canobbio pulling them back into the match, but they never fully controlled the key phases.

The squad still has a strong physical foundation. Fernando Muslera needs to bring calm in goal, Guillermo Varela has an important role on the flank, and Manuel Ugarte gives the midfield ball-winning, aggression and defensive bite. Federico Viñas can provide penalty-box presence and battle for deliveries, but Uruguay need better support around him. The biggest issue is defensive spacing after attacking moves. Cape Verde found ways to punish gaps, and Spain have far more speed and precision in those areas. If Uruguay press high, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams can attack the space behind. If they drop too deep, Rodri and Pedri can take control around the box.

Spain

Spain produced the response they needed after the flat draw with Cape Verde. Against Saudi Arabia, Luis de la Fuente’s side played with more speed, more width and far more intent in the final third. Lamine Yamal scored in his first start after the break, Mikel Oyarzabal added two goals quickly, and the 4-0 win restored the sense that Spain can turn possession into real pressure when they play vertically.

The balance of the team looks stronger than Uruguay’s right now. Joan García is protected by Spain’s possession structure and Aymeric Laporte’s leadership, while Rodri controls rhythm and shuts down transitions before they develop. Pedri gives the attack acceleration between the lines, and the wide pairing of Yamal and Nico Williams can stretch almost any defensive block. The risk is becoming too cautious because of their position in the group, but the Cape Verde match was a clear warning against sterile control. If Spain keep the directness they showed against Saudi Arabia, they have enough quality to win by more than one goal.

Match Prediction

Uruguay remain dangerous because of their physical intensity, pressing and ability to create chaotic spells, but their first two matches revealed too many issues in defensive control. They have already conceded three goals in the group and have not yet shown the composure needed to manage pressure over a full match.

Spain arrive with a much cleaner attacking rhythm. Their wide players can attack Uruguay’s weak spots, Pedri can find pockets behind midfield, and Rodri gives them the control Uruguay have lacked. If Bielsa’s side are forced to chase the win, Spain should find the space needed to create separation. The -1 Asian Handicap gives protection if Spain win by one goal, while the current form points toward a realistic chance of a stronger result.

How Spain Can Create Separation

Uruguay have failed to close out either of their first two matches and have already conceded three goals. Against Spain’s width, quick passing and improved final-third tempo, those defensive gaps could become costly.

Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia restored the verticality and attacking aggression missing against Cape Verde. Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri and Rodri give them the pace, width and control to dictate the match.

Spain -1 Asian Handicap fits the tournament situation. Uruguay may need to push for a win, and that should create transition space for Spain to punish mistakes and chase a margin beyond a single goal.
